(11/02/2008) Community and Voluntary Sector Priorities Agreed
The future of Thurrock was the focus for more than 40 delegates from active community groups, voluntary sector organisations and faith groups on Saturday, 2 February 2008.
Delegates considered the pros and cons of growth and agreed priorities to come together and influence in the future.
Overwhelming priority was given to the need to support social cohesion across Thurrock and across all its communities.
The leader of Thurrock Council, Terry Hipsey; Chair of South West Essex Primary Care Trust, Val Liddiard; and Chair of the Thurrock Thames Gateway Development Corporation, Will McKee gave presentations on A Vision for Thurrock in 2021.
All speakers reflected on the huge growth planned for Thurrock and the potential of these changes to improve life in Thurrock.
Voluntary, community and faith organisations saw their own activities, with appropriate support, as being key to achieving better social cohesion for Thurrock's future.
Other priorities included better infrastructure, increasing the capacity of services to meet need, training and education for young people and policing.
The day was organised through the Community Involvement Board (CIB) which is looking to improve its own effectiveness as the spearhead for bringing the community, voluntary and faith sector views into the shaping of local policy and strategy.
More information on the CIB and how to get involved can be found on this web site, or by phoning Levi Hinds on 01375 652435.
