Shaping Thurrock - the borough's Local Strategic Partnership - came together in May to launch a new initiative aimed at tackling crime, increasing healthcare and preserving Thurrock's natural environment.
Members from each of Shaping Thurrock's partners introduced the Sustainable Community Strategy and Local Area Agreement (LAA) to a wide range of local public service providers, regional partners, voluntary and community groups, and representatives from local businesses.
The two documents were developed to identify how local organisations working together can significantly improve how public services are delivered to our residents both now and in the future.
Leader of the council, Terry Hipsey, was at the launch in his role as the then Chair of Shaping Thurrock. 'This programme has been developed with local people for local people' he said.
'Our new Sustainable Community Strategy and the LAA will look at what makes our residents feel safe, what keeps them healthy and independent; what will ensure children and young people have positive futures and excellent opportunities.
'Not only that' he continued, 'but it also guarantees that our green spaces - such an important aspect of the borough for every resident - are maintained and well-kept for generations'
Representatives from Thurrock Council, South West Essex Primary Care Trust, Essex Police and Government Office East also spoke at the launch.
'By continuously working with the communities we serve' added councilor Hipsey, 'Shaping Thurrock partners gain a more clear and distinct definition of what Thurrock residents expect of us and this can only help to improve our service delivery.'
The Sustainable Community Strategy states long-term objectives for Thurrock, outlining plans for services up until 2021. The Local Area Agreement outlines how these plans will be delivered in the first three years.
During the event, Simon Coxall, Divisional Commander, South West Essex Division of Essex Police concluded that the Sustainable Community Strategy was about empowerment.
'Quite often we think of ourselves and the work we do as doing things 'to people' and 'for people'' he said.
'Really, we should be thinking of how we are creating a place where Thurrock and the people living and working here are in a position to do things for themselves and the benefit of each other'
