Background: 'Tackling Fear of Crime & Disorder in the Community'
The Crime Reduction Website has produced a document entitled 'Tackling Fear of Crime & Disorder in the Community. The document is designed to encourage individuals and groups to get involved in reducing crime and disorder and fear of crime in their community.
The guidance is drawn from the Crime Reduction Website 'Fear of Crime' Toolkit, and 'Crime Reduction Basics - Tackling Crime and ASB in the Community.'
Rather than looking at reducing fear of crime problems in general, the document's aim is to look at the impact of crime and anti-social behaviour as the drivers for fear in the community, and ways in which the community can become involved in reducing crime and disorder and thereby reduce fear as a consequence.
The document aims to help the Community to
- Understand what drives fear of crime.
- Identify who is involved in their local crime and disorder reduction partnership and what services they can expect from it.
- Describe a simple problem solving process that can be used to reduce the fear of crime.
- Describe some of the methods that can be used to reduce fear of crime.
Most importantly, it identifies for the community what they can do to reduce fear of crime locally.
The document is broken down into small chapters covering a number of sections including:
- General Crime & Disorder Information and Statistics.
- Different types of approaches to tackling crime - situational, social, problem orientated policing and multi-agency working.
- The Fear of Crime.
- Identifying the problems and why it is a problem.
- Theoretical models.
- Anti-Social Behaviour generally, as well as ASBO's and ABC's.
- The Community's role in ASB.
- Guidance on how to become more involved in crime reduction.
- Useful contacts and websites.
The document, at the end of each small chapter, poses questions for consideration by the reader, to prompt ideas and solutions to some of the crime and disorder problems in the area.

% of people who feel safe or fairly safe alone outside during the day - 92%
% of residents who think youths causing a problem is their most significant fear - 73%

Get involved with your community
A Community Forum is a community group which is made up of various people that live, work or have general interest in their local community and want to make a difference. A community Forum provides a way for the public to raise their issues and concerns, and can enable people to have a say on local issues and be part of any decision making processes.
The Community Forums in Thurrock have a budget in which they are able to fund projects and initiatives that benefit the local community. The amount that each Forum is allocated does vary and is dependant on the size of the population that the Forum represents. A Forum meets no more than once a month, and is often attended by the local ward councillors and the neighbourhood police.
It is important that communities work together to make their area a better place to live. So why not find out when your next local Forum meeting is and help to make a difference to your local community.
For more information about community Forums contact ngage on 01375 389893 or visit their website at www.ngagethurrock.org.uk
